This post is in continuation of my earlier post about the
Wave Rock at Hyden, Australia.
Unlike the Hyden rock which is of granite, these rocks are made of Sandstone and are known as 'The Wave'. Actually it is a small ravine between eroded sandstone and is about 190-million-year-old sand dunes turned to rock. The psychedelic multicoloured layers are due to presence of Iron oxides. The area is known as Coyote Buttes and lies on the border of Utah and Arizona, USA. It was almost unknown till mid 1990s but a shooting of a German Movie ('Faszination Natur' by Gogol Lobmayr, 1995) made it popular and now it is probably one of the most-photographed rock formations in North America.
To keep the Wave from being damaged or overrun, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) allows no more than 20 visitors a day (10 from the on-site lottery and 10 from an online lottery)
