Giant Anamorphic Red Flower, Nanning Gateway, China
The gateway on the Liunan Expressway at the entrance to the City of Nanning has two giant red coloured steel sculptures on each side of the road embankments.
The one on the south side of the road, shown below, is a static sculpture in the form of a giant red flower in full bloom.
The sculpture on the north side is an illusory flower made of series of petals set alongside the embankment of the road at different angles at varying distances. From a distance it looks like giant flower but it defrags into individual petals as one drives by it. I think in the art world it is known as spatial anamorphosis. This remarkable piece of art was designed by Denton Corker Marshal. Given below are the thumbnails of the images captured from their website.
In the words of the Architects "…… While travelling along the road, one of the flowers deconstructs into a series of petal elements that come out of the cutting on the side of the road, changing the gateway into a space/time experience, rather than a static one."
