Colourful Domes

Majara Residence, a seaside tourist accommodation complex on the island of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, Iran, comprises 200 colourful and distinctive domes. The domes, varying in size and shape, are interconnected and contain lodgings and other public facilities. The complex comprises of 6,300 square metres (about 68,00 Sq, ft.) of open space and 4,000 square metres (about 43,000 Sq. ft.) of built-up area. Seventeen suites are distributed among 130 domes, with a maximum capacity of 85 guests. The remaining domes are reserved for public purposes, including galleries, eateries, cafes, a prayer room, a souvenir shop, and tourist information booths.

The domes were built using the economical, eco-friendly "Superadobe" construction method, in which long sandbags filled with dirt are stacked on top of one another to produce a sturdy structure. The bags are usually stacked in a spiral arrangement, which gives the structure more strength and stability. Once the desired height and shape have been attained, a layer of barbed wire is wrapped around the outer surface of the wall to stabilise it and keep it from shifting or collapsing. To create a smooth and long-lasting surface, the outside and interior walls are plastered and then painted in the desired colours.

The complex, which was finished in 2020, was designed by ZAV Architects, an architectural firm based in Tehran. Since its completion, it has gained international recognition and received numerous awards.
