The chimney of the BĂłbila Almirall in Terrassa, Spain, with a helical iron staircase on the outer surface, is the tallest chimney in the world with such a design. The 20 metre (65.6 ft.) tall chimney, designed by Antoni de Moragas, was built in 1956 by master builder Marià Masana Ribas, and is used for the heating and ventilation system to disperse smoke and other byproducts of combustion into the atmosphere. The iron staircase has 217 steps to the first viewing platform at the top. In 1991 it was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest chimney with spiral staircases in the world.
The Chimney with spiral stairs creates a distinctive visual effect, and is considered a masterpiece of modernist architecture, and has become an iconic symbol of the city of Terrassa.
