A 182 metres (597 ft) tall statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai
Patel in Gujarat, India, inaugurated today (October 31, 2018), is the tallest Statue in the World.
With its inauguration it has pushed the Spring Temple Budha Statue (153 m/502
ft) at Lushan, Henan, China to number 2 spot. The statue is almost twice the
height of Statue of Liberty (93 m/305 ft).
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was one of the core group of freedom
fighters whose struggle led to India gaining independence from the British Rule
on August 15, 1947. He was the first Deputy Prime Minister of Independent India.
He was posthumously decorated with Bharat Ratna (India's highest civilian
award).
As the first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of
India, Patel led the task of forging a united India, successfully integrating
into the newly independent nation, about 565 self-governing princely states that
were under direct British rule. The statue officially titled "Statue of Unity"
is dedicated to his efforts of creating a united India.
The monument located on the river island called Sadhu Bet
near Narmada Dam, Narmada Gujarat was designed by Indian sculptor Ram V. Sutar.
It was
built at a cost of Rs. 29.89 Billion (US$ 420 million) and the work on the
project took about 4 years to complete.
