The Rock of Guatapé (Spanish: El Peñón de Guatapé) is a huge monolithic rock near the town of Guatapé, Colombia. It is one of the largest monolith rock in the World.
The rock is about 190 metres high, 380 metres long with a maximum width of 100 metres and as per geologists was formed about 70 million years ago.
Because of its almost vertical face it had presented a challenge to the rock climbers and it was scaled for the first time in 1954 when three locals climbed it in five days by using sticks embedded in a fissure on the rock. Later a pathway with 644 steps was constructed in one of the large fissure and large number of tourists climb to the top. There is a viewing platform at the top which provides a panoramic view of the area below.
