Bled Island in Lake Bled in north-western Slovenia is a small island about 170 metres (558 feet) long and 86 metres (282 feet) wide.
Main attraction of the island is a small church of the Assumption of Mary. Besides the church, the island also houses the Provost's house and a couple of smaller buildings behind the church.
The church on the island dates back to the 10th century, however the present building was built in the late 17th century. The church is accessed by stairway with 99 steps leading up to the building.
The church is a popular locale for weddings because as per local tradition a husband who can climb the 99 steps carrying his newly married bride into the church will be ensured a happy marriage. As per another tradition ringing of the Church's bell will fulfil one's wishes.
