Giant Rock Painting of Buddha, Lashaosi, China

The area between the Chinese towns of Tianshui and Lanzhou has several ancient Buddhist grottoes and sculptures. These towns are situated on the route of the ancient Northern Silk Road, through which most of trade occurred between China and the West.

Tucked in the mountainous region between these towns lies the Lashaosi (meaning: Pull a little) temple having these three giant figures of Buddha carved in relief. The central figure being 60 metres in height. Built around 559 AD, these relief works are amazing as these are embossed on a high vertical face of the sandstone rock cliff, known as Big Buddha cliff. Although exposed to weather the work has survived and has retained not only the shape but also most of its colour.
