Water Tank House

The strange looking house pictured here, was once a water tank which actually looked like a house. Located in the coastal village of Thorpeness, Suffolk, England, the water tank was built in 1923 and at the landowner's request it was camouflaged by wooden boards to look like a house.

The tank which initially had a capacity of 230,000 litres was hit by a bomb in World War -II which resulted damage to the tank and reduction of capacity to 140,000 litres. The tank was finally decommissioned in 1977 and in 1979 it was converted into a full house with five bedrooms.

The water tank was initially named as 'The Gazebo' but after its conversion the owner has renamed it as "House in the Cloud". With a height of about 22 metres, the house looms high over the village and can be seen from far.

The water tower house alongwith the nearby wind mill which was used to lift water into the tank have became the local icon.
