Coober Pedy a town in northern South Australia is a complete underground town where not only the majority of the residents live below the ground but many shops, malls, museum and churches are also below ground. It is desolated area with almost no vegetation. Due to scorching day heat the residents prefer to stay below ground, mostly in disused opal mines which are refurbished as per the needs of the residents.
Australia supplies 97% of World's opal, most of which comes from the mines of Coober Pedy. It has over 70 opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the World. As a matter of fact the town is more famous as "The Opal Capital of the World" than due to its underground habitat.
Established in 1915 the town is gradually changing. With improved infrastructure, the residents are now moving above ground and many houses have been built above ground. Efforts are also been made to plant trees all around.
Because of its strange way of living the town has been locale of many films.
