The Tower of Hercules is considered to World's oldest functional lighthouse. It is located near the town of A Coruña (the name Coruña is said to be derived from the ancient columna, or Tower) in the north-western peninsula of Spain and overlooks the North Atlantic coast of Spain. It is 55 metres high and has been in constant use since the 2nd century but was reconstructed in 1791. Built by Romans, originally it had an ascending ramp along its sides, so that fuel wood for the burning light could be carried by beasts of burdens right upto the top.
