In far-east mainly in Southern China, Philippines and some parts of Indonesia a small group of people have the strange tradition of burying their dead in coffins which are either hung on the rocky face of mountains or are kept in caves with some portion jutting out. The coffins are generally built by old people themselves sometimes with the help of their relatives. The tradition is reportedly 2000 years but from last century the tradition has been declining and most of the people in the area are now buried in the ground.
Here are few photos of hanging coffins at the rocky mountains of Sagada, Philippines where hundreds of coffins are lined/piled up inside caves or are just hung on the rocky face.

Hi there,
ReplyDeleteI'm the art director at knowledge.ca (the public broadcaster of British Columbia, Canada). We're showing a doc called "Mysterious Hanging Coffins of China" and I'm looking for pics to promote it. I love the photos on your site. Is there anyway to get the rights, and a high-res version?
Hi Angela
ReplyDeleteThe images in my blog are copyrighted by the individual photographers. Pl click on the Panoramio link below each image which will take you to Panoramio page from where you can seek permission from individual photographers for re-use and also obtain hi-res images.
Alternatively you have a look at Creative Commons Images from Flickr from where you can use images without seeking permission but as per certain limitations noted in each page. The list is long and you may have to view all the pages to find the relevant images.
If you have any further query please don't hesitate to contact me again.
