These strange small water pools amid the sand dunes in Saudi Arabia are called Sabkha (meaning salt flat). They are formed along arid coastlines and are flat and very saline areas of sand or silt lying just above the water-table in the sand. These are very dry and crusty in summer but after rain they are slippery and treacherous to drive on.
