The Huaisheng Mosque in Guangzhou originally built over 1,300 years ago is reportedly one of the oldest mosques in the World and possibly the oldest mosques in China. The mosque, a blend of Chinese and Arabic architecture, was reportedly built in the 7th Century, when Islam was introduced in China by Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas, who was an uncle of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Hence its name Huaisheng, which in Chinese means 'remember the sage'. The mosque is also called Lighthouse Mosque because a lamp used to be hung from its 12 metre high tower to guide the boats in Pearl River.

incredible! you've found it.would like to share a special moment that my husband experienced. As he passed a tree in this mosque he was drenched with water drops while there was no sign of rain elsewhere. It could'nt have been dew drops for sure according to him.
ReplyDeleteThe Huaisheng masque was also called Canton mosque because Guangzhou was earlier named Canton where foreigners (mainly europeans) settled for the first time in china. Cantonese version of chinese language(spoken in southeast china and Hongkong) is quite different from mandarin(spoken in Beijing and the official version)
ReplyDeleteit' so beutiful, i'd like to visit that mosque.
